Session 3: Namdaemun / Everyone Posts Comments to This Thread (by Sunday 4/06/08)

I will post my comments this week after everyone else. I want to see your comments first now--instead of (sometimes) merely copying mine. I posted last week to give you a general idea of what was wanted in your posts. I think you understand the assignment now.

Namdaemun has many goods. There seems to be out of season. There is from fur pieces to swimming suits in spite of April, spring. In addition, working time is different with other market places. Maybe, their working time is for wholesale dealers. Namdaemun seems to be in existence, not only for a consumer but also for a dealer.
Namdaemun mixes well with various neighbors. old lady pulling a rear-car, mother and little child, schoolgirls and foreigner. I have forgotten that we live together with many people because I am accustomed to purchasing goods in well-arranged stores used by middle-class people or upper classes. honestly sweating working-people to live, I will memorize them.

Namdaemun was quite different from . It's easy to notice that main customers of Namdaemun are foreigners or the elderly. Many stores sell Korean souvenirs like jinseng and write Japanese, Chinese or English guidance to help foreigners. And It was very unique that we can see a small shop for changing foreign currency to Korean money.
Compared with Apgujeong and Myoungdong, there were too many clothes and stuff for elderly people such as mountain-climbing equipment and suit for middle-ages women. And most goods are remarkably cheap so people surrounded the shop (it was like a cart or wooden board?) and compete to pick more nice things.
Especially, interesting point was "touting". In Myoungdong or Apgujeong, most shops arouse interest by making pretty girls stand in front of the stores but Namdaemun there were many loud and harsh shopkeepers touting people. they shout that his/her store's things are the most cheapest and the best. And in the streets we heard many songs so-called "Trot" in Korea that elderly people like to listen. Opposed the case we experienced in Myoungdong and Apgujeong (in there, we can listen many pop songs for youngsters), Namdaemun was very peculiar shopping place.
